The MU is seeking to document members’ experiences of misogyny and/or sexism working in the music industry to respond to the Women and Equalities Select Committees Enquiry: Misogyny in Music.

In recent years, a number of studies and reports have brought to light the extent to which women working within the music industry experience sexism, including allegations of harassment and coercive control.

Committee inquiry

The Committee's inquiry will explore the sexism experienced by women within the industry but will also look at the representation of women within music and the effect of this on consumers. The inquiry will also focus on harassment at festivals and other live music events.

Furthermore this inquiry will explore what steps can be taken to improve attitudes and treatment of women working in music and is part of the committee’s work into Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls.

MU response and policy work

It’s vital that the MU’s response and policy work is shaped by the lived experiences of our members who experience misogyny and/or sexism.

All eligible members will be emailed a short survey over the coming days and we ask if you can, you complete this so we can help make the music industry a safer, more equitable place for women.

If you do not receive a link to the survey, or have any questions regarding this please reach out to equalities@themu.org.

If you would like to be more involved with the MU’s equality, diversity and inclusion work join one of the MU’s Equality Networks.
