What are MU Education Reps

MU Education Reps are a grassroots level liaison between the MU and music education workplaces in the UK.

The MU Education Reps can operate across a broad remit, from conservatoires, specialist music schools and music services across the three nations of the UK.

What do Education Reps do

The primary objective for the MU’s Education Reps is to foster a strong and effective connection between the MU and members working across a diverse range of music education settings. This is a pivotal role in understanding colleagues’ specific needs, challenges and aspirations, and where appropriate helps shape future policies, initiatives, and resources. Reps can also draw attention to situations facing members that may require more formal involvement from the MU.

Education Reps help the MU by:

  • Making it known in their workplace(s) that they are Education Reps and that other MU members can speak to them
  • Reporting on developments at their workplace, including where there are issues with contracts or management
  • Attending meetings at MU HQ and/or submitting written reports to the MU
  • Knowing about MU membership benefits for the purpose of recruiting new members
  • Taking part in occasional training if needed

In recognition of the role that Education Reps play in helping the MU, they receive a discount on their MU subs and a small referral payment when they recruit a new member.
