Is ESTA the Right Way to Go?

September 2017 Update

Further to the recent reports of several musicians invited to perform at South By Southwest (SXSW) having their approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) revoked unaccountably by the US authorities days before travel, musicians can no longer rely on using ESTA to enter the US to perform at any music showcasing event.

There are conflicting schools of thought as to whether an ESTA is actually permissible for Showcase events.

Until we can get some clarification from the US on the validity of an ESTA when performing we cannot provide definitive advice.
