Touring Checklist

Protect yourself

On this page you will find information about:

  • Using a contract
  • Permits and visas
  • Medical and legal cover
  • Instrument insurance for MU members
  • Air travel with an instrument

1. Protect yourself against unpaid fees by making sure that your tour or engagement is covered by a written contract (in English). Have it vetted by the MU for added peace of mind.

2. Make sure you have a valid work permit and any associated visa well in advance of your departure date to avoid being turned away by immigration services.

3. Ensure you have up-to-date medical and legal expenses cover. For details of the medical services available overseas, try the HMRC NI helpline for non-UK residents (0845 915 4811) or visit

4. MU members are eligible for up to £2,000 of free worldwide instrument insurance cover. If you are travelling abroad – as a freelance musician or with an orchestra – ensure that your insurance is activated before you travel. Call Hencilla Canworth on 020 8686 5050 or email them on

5. Each airline and airport has its own policy regarding what instruments can and cannot be stored in the overhead locker of an aeroplane and the number of bags you can take onboard. Check with your airline direct before you book your tickets.
