Synchronisation Rights & Licencing

Resources and Guidance

On this page you will find information about:

  • Guidance on synchronisation rights
  • MU resources
  • MU template licences for TV, film & advertising

The right to synchronise music into films, TV programmes, adverts and computer games can be a valuable additional revenue stream. 'Sync rights' can also generate publicity and raise an artist’s profile.

The number of sync agencies, dedicated solely to brokering relationships and deals between artists and brands, has increased dramatically over the past couple of years.

To accompany our template licences, the MU is also offering members the Association of Independent Music’s (AIM) Guide To Synchronisation Licensing. This guide provides invaluable advice on the principles and rights involved plus pages of UK and international contact details for music supervisors working in TV, film and advertising.

The MU has a range of resources to help its members negotiate synchronisation deals and agree appropriate terms for the use of their music. We have produced template sync licences for TV, film and advertising, and these can be adapted to each particular deal’s variables, whether it is for the rights in the composition or use of the master recording itself.

The MU template licences also cover the territory (UK-only, worldwide, etc), the term (the length of the licence period) and the media (television, cinema, online, etc).

As with any deal, before signing on the dotted line, Union members are urged to consult the MU Contract Advisory Service for guidance.
