Birmingham Pride

25 May 2019

10:30 am

The Musicians’ Union (MU) will be joining the march at Birmingham Pride for the first time in 2019, and have a limited number of places for MU members to join the march.

Pride provides a platform to campaign for genuine LGBT+ equality and to raise awareness of current LGBT+ issues. The MU’s presence at Pride marches is ultimately about fairness and the fundamental principle that all musicians are equal under the law.

The MU feels it’s important to state publicly, and in a united voice, that the MU stands up for everyone, including those who may be at greater risk of discrimination or unfair treatment.

The MU would like to encourage our Midlands members to join us regardless of their sexuality. Allies are an important part of any movement for equality, so even if you’re not part of the LGBT+ community come and show your support for LGBT+ equality.

Why is this important?

Stonewalls 2018 LGBT+ in Britain Work Report revealed:

  • Almost one in five LGBT+ staff (18 per cent) have been the target of negative comments or conduct from work colleagues in the last year because they're LGBT+.
  • One in eight lesbian, gay and bi people (12 per cent) wouldn’t feel confident reporting any homophobic or biphobic bullying to their employer. One in five trans people (21 per cent) wouldn’t report transphobic bullying in the workplace.
  • More than a third of LGBT+ staff (35 per cent) have hidden or disguised that they are LGBT+ at work in the last year because they were afraid of discrimination.

If people aren’t valued or respected in the workplace or in wider society, they are prevented from performing to the best of their ability and achieving their full potential. For people who are in that position, they need to know that the MU is there for them to turn to for help.
