IWD2015: Assertiveness & How to Make It Happen

To celebrate International Women’s Day, over 60 female musicians from across the UK gathered to talk about the challenges they face in an assertiveness workshop.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, 60 female musicians from across the UK gathered to talk about the challenges they face in an assertiveness workshop with FEU Training’s Frances Dredge. But what is assertiveness? And how can it help you?

Assertiveness is... being confident and direct in claiming your rights and stating your view, opinions and needs in any given situation.

Self-esteem is important... assertive people think that they should be treated with respect, and respect others as well.

Don’t take it personally... feel comfortable saying yes and no. Remember it’s okay for others to say no to you, for the same reasons it’s okay for you to say no to them.

Know your priorities... assertive people prioritise their own needs and wants. "I've seen people negotiate putting it all out upfront and not asking for anything back. You need to watch that” says Frances.

It’s all about you... being assertive means you don’t take responsibility for other people’s problems. Especially when it affects your work or income.

Remember... “Like anything, we need to practice practice practice". For more advice on assertiveness, plus more workshops on this and other issues, visit www.feutraining.org.
