Musicians Will Need to be Aware of New Ultra Low Emission Zone in Central London

An Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will be in place in central London from 8 April 2019.

An Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will be in place in central London from 8 April 2019.

Most vehicles including cars and vans will need to meet new, tighter exhaust emission standards (ULEZ standards) or pay a daily charge to travel within the area of the ULEZ.

Unfortunately, musicians will not be exempt from these charges – despite lobbying from the Musicians’ Union (MU).

During the consultation period, the MU argued that musicians should be exempt from the charge if they are forced to drive into London carrying large instruments or equipment.

If an exemption was not possible, we suggested that a scale of charges be introduced for essential car users.

Neither of these arguments was accepted and further lobbying has been unsuccessful.

Members will therefore need to ensure that their vehicle is compliant or face extra charges.

See more information about the ULEZ on Transport for London’s website.
