Why the MU needs your personal information, and how it's protected

Often we will ask about your personal details when you fill out a form for us – questions about your age, sex, gender identity, sexuality, race, or whether you identify as disabled. But where does all this information go?

The MU uses this information to be more effective. It tells us where to direct our services, it shows us if certain groups of people aren’t making the most of their membership, and it makes sure that members get what they’re paying for.

For example, if we learn that we have large numbers of older members, we may develop specific schemes or services that will benefit that group. Or if we find we have a lack of members from BAME backgrounds, that tells us we need to do more work to recruit BAME musicians.

If you don’t feel comfortable then you don’t have to give us the information. However, the information you pass on to us about race, sexuality etc is always dealt with separately from your membership record, so we won’t be able to know who you are. There are very strict laws to make sure we protect those details and deal with them responsibly.

Equality Networks

Members' opinions on equality and diversity issues are vital to the way the MU shapes its services, policies and campaigns.

As a member-led organisation, the MU often asks for members' opinions on a whole range of topics to ensure that our work represents your views. Our equality networks are an important part of this process.

Network members receive regular updates on our equalities work via newsletters, as well as the opportunity to contribute to MU consultation responses and take part in surveys.

As a network member there is no obligation for you to respond to emails, although the more you contribute, the more the MU can reflect members’ views.
