Member Diversity Monitoring

Why the MU needs your personal information, and how it's protected.

Last updated: 28 September 2021

When you are an MU member, we will ask about your personal details when you join or renew your membership – questions about your age, sex, gender identity, sexuality, race, or whether you identify as disabled.

The MU uses this information to be more effective. It tells us where to direct our services, it shows us if certain groups of people aren’t making the most of their membership, and it makes sure that members get what they’re paying for.

For example, if we learn that we have large numbers of older members, we may develop specific schemes or services that will benefit that group. Or if we find we have a lack of members from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds, that tells us we need to do more work to recruit Black and minority ethnic musicians.

The information you supply helps make the MU better by allowing us to develop services at the right people. And, as always, it won’t come back to you personally.

The Musicians’ Union is dedicated to representing the diversity of its membership.
