MU Membership Subs Holiday

Struggling to pay your MU membership subscription during the Covid-19 crisis? Apply online to take a payment holiday

In response to the widespread cancellation of work that has hit our profession as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we have taken the decision to allow members facing genuine and pressing hardship to apply for a holiday from payment of their MU subscription fees.

From October 2020 we are offering an additional three-month holiday:

  • If you have already successfully taken a subscription holiday, you are now eligible to apply for a further three months.
  • If you have not yet taken a subscription holiday, you can apply now and, if you are eligible, you will automatically be given a 6-month holiday.

We have also extended the period within which you can apply for a subscription holiday until 31 March 2021.

Eligibility

The MU subscription holiday is available on application, to current MU members who have kept their membership subscriptions up to date. Unlike a mortgage holiday, there is no obligation to repay the balance at a later date.

Applicants must be paying the full membership rate or joint NEU/UCU/EIS membership rate. Members who joined for £1 over six months ago and are therefore currently paying the full membership rate by Direct Debit will also be eligible.

Members who joined for £1 under six months ago, members paying the student rate and retired members will not be eligible. Members who pay their subscription by Direct Debit but have cancelled their payment instruction will need to reinstate it before applying.

At this stage we are unable to grant subscriptions holidays in excess of the six-month maximum. Any applications received from members already in receipt of the full holiday allocation will be refused.

Members paying subscriptions by monthly or quarterly Direct Debit

Each eligible member is entitled to either two three-month subscription holidays or one combined six-month subscription holiday which must be started by 31 March 2021. If, at the time of application, you have already successfully taken an initial three-month holiday, you will be considered for a second three-months. If, at the time of application, you have not yet taken a subscription holiday at all, you will automatically be granted a six-month holiday provided you meet the eligibility criteria, as set out above.

Subscription holidays will begin from the date the eligible member’s next subscription payment is due following receipt of their application. It is not possible to future-date membership subscription holidays, so please only apply directly before you wish to make use of the holiday.

If an application is received within ten working days prior to a monthly or quarterly direct debit demand, then it may not be possible to stop the direct debit from being processed. If this is the case, the membership subscription holiday will start on the following month or quarter.

Members paying subscriptions annually

If you pay annually by Direct Debit and you have already renewed your current MU membership a refund equal to six months of your annual fee (or three months, if you have already received an initial 3-month refund) will be paid to your account within a month of your application.

If you pay annually by credit or debit card and you have already renewed your current MU membership, a refund equal to six months of your annual fee (or three months, if you have already received an initial 3-month refund) will be credited back to your card within a month of your application.

If you pay annually by Direct Debit / credit or debit card and your apply for a subscription holiday between ten and 21 days prior to your renewal date, your next annual renewal fee will be reduced by a value equivalent to six months of your annual fee (or three months, if you have already received an initial 3-month refund).
